15-Jan-2010

Finally I feel like I can say ‘Welcome back to the new term’ (and feel that we will actually see you all!) I hope you all had an enjoyable time over Christmas and New Year, and in the recent snow - fun for a few days but a bit of a nuisance when it persists!

I would like to take this opportunity to let you know about several exciting new ventures for the term, and some dates for your diaries.

In term 4 we are going to be running a project called ‘Family SEAL’. This will be available for the Reception class. There will be an introductory meeting on Friday 26th February from 1:45 - 3:15pm. The sessions will be on Tuesday afternoons from 1:30 - 3:00pm run by our Learning Mentors, Mrs Sally Booth and Mrs Helen McCollum. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to come in and work alongside your child. We will have spaces for 15 families to attend these sessions - if you are interested please complete the slip below, places will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

We have a new project - for which we are a pilot school for the local authority -  called ‘Fit Families 4 Life’. This is a project where families (up to 2 adults) and the children in the family, can work together with some great activities to help to keep fit and to learn about being healthy. It will run on a Wednesday after school for six weeks and will begin on 3rd February. We have 20 spaces available so only about 5 families will get this opportunity in the first instance - but we hope we will be able to run it again later. As a way of making this a fair process we are going to pull names out of a hat from the Y1 class. If you are one of the lucky ones we will be in contact again soon.

We have staff currently undergoing training for a ‘Healthy Kids Club’ which will be for Y5/Y6 pupils. This will run later in the year - more details later.

Singing

We also have an exciting new singing opportunity, funded  though our Extended School Partnership we are able to offer a specialist singing teacher on Wednesday afternoons for Years 4, 5 and 6 to each have a 40 minute singing lesson each week. We hope to build this towards a performance for you later in the year. We have also been able to extend this opportunity to provide a free after school singing club for the pupils in Year 2 and Year 3.

Kenya

After Mrs Drinkwater’s visit to Kenya last term, she has been working with the pupils learning about Dabaso village and life in Kenya. She will be working with each class in turn over the course of the year.

Mosaics

After discussing the Christian symbols around school, members of our HAWK council decided that we should have some mosaic pictures depicting Jesus’ life around the school grounds. Mrs Skyrme a local artist and parent, and Miss O’Mara our Art LSA, have been helping the pupils in Y3 to create these. They now have two complete and Year 4 are now undertaking their first picture. Again this opportunity is going to be given to each KS2 class.

Dance at the Playhouse

Our Y4 pupils are going to be dancing at the playhouse on 1st February. They are taking part in this years ‘Dance their Socks Off’ performance. Tickets will be from the playhouse.

Storybox Theatre

We are fortunate to have managed to book Rod Burnett and his Storybox theatre to attend school on Tuesday 23rd February. He is a master puppeteer who will be telling the story of the Fisherman - A Grimms Fairytale. He has been to school several times and the pupils are always transfixed by his performances. We would request a voluntary donation of £1:50 per child to contribute towards the cost of this performance.

Dates:

12th February: Our last Inset of the year. School closed.

23rd March: Book Fayre: come and peruse the lovely children’s books that are available at reasonable prices this week at our book fayre. Can any interested parents who are willing to help at this event please come and let Mrs Farnell or the school office know your availability.

1st April: Easter production by Y5 for parents  at 2:00pm - book in the date!

Term Dates

School is closed between 15th - 19th February for end of term break.

We will re-open on Monday 22nd February until Thursday 1st April.

Yours sincerely,
